UP Day 3 & 4 - Marquette & Home

I apologize for all of the jumping around I've been doing on the blog with interrupting my vacation posts for my clothing sale. (Which is going well, some things have already sold...you can see the updates on what is still available here, here, and here!) Now I'm back on track though with the last of my vacation posts. Monday/Tuesday I'll actually have a *gasp* real outfit shoot to share! It really seems like it's been forever since I've posted regular non-vacation outfit photos!

On day 3 of our vacation we headed over to Marquette, which for those of you unfamiliar with Michigan is the largest city in the upper peninsula. The first thing we did was head to Sugarloaf, which is a mountain overlooking Lake Superior. It's about 1/2 mile walk to the top. With my ankle still a little weak we chose the easy hike which took about 30 minutes because it takes you around the mountain instead of just straight up. The view once you get to the top is absolutely incredible; completely immersing you in Lake Superior's grandeur! It was a rainy/overcast day which gave our surroundings an eerie, foreboding, and hauntingly beautiful air. We stayed up top for awhile just taking it all in and enjoyed some yummy feta, hummus, and avocado sandwiches for lunch.

Jon and I spent that night in a hotel as my back was killing me from the camping. After enjoying the pool, hot tub, and sauna we went out and hit the town. Marquette is a smaller city, but it's a college town with a cute little downtown area. Jon and I got some ice cream walked up and down the streets. Everything was closed by that time but it was fun just to walk around at night and look at all of the store displays. There was one store with so much old film equipment! 8mm, 16mm, 35mm it had it all! I really wish that store had been open! We went down to the lake near a huge stone building in the water that looked like a "water church," haha. It's actually what they use to load iron onto the ships, but it was just such a bizarre stone building just sitting in the water!

I didn't get a photo of it, but I found one on google:

Doesn't it look like a water church? Or some type of water temple?

The next day we got ready to head back home. Before we left we had breakfast at the sweetest little bakery called, Babycakes. I had the most delicious caramel and pecan scone, mmmmm! We snapped a couple photos of the city on our way out:

And so we started the 9 hour journey back down to Detroit! We stopped along Lake Michigan just before crossing the bridge. We went to the lake for a little bit (as I said before it was even colder then Superior, what?!) Jon was brave enough to swim, but I just stayed along the shoreline.

We also stopped at a tourist shop/lookout point that we used to always go to on family vacations. It's a bit of a climb to the top, but there's a great view of Lake Michigan along with the bridge.

Once we crossed over we headed to Lake Huron in Mackinaw city for a final memorial for my dad. We found an isolated pier (other than the ferry boat coming back in from Mackinac Island) and scattered his ashes. It was a fishing pier and my dad loved fishing, so I think he would have like it there. My sister scattered his ashes last week in Lake Michigan, so the only lakes left are Erie and Ontario. I think we'll be doing Lake Erie tomorrow. While scattering the ashes has been very difficult for us it's also been very cathartic and helpful in the grieving process especially because my dad didn't want a funeral.

I know my blog has been focusing more on lifestyle posts lately rather than fashion, but I appreciate everyone sticking with me and giving me encouragement during this difficult time. Thank you.
