The King's Speech was amazing! It was so good. I highly recommend it. I loved the cinematography. All of the shots were perfectly set up, but then one or two things would be slightly askew. Jon felt that the style really worked well with the building up of Colin Firth's character, King George VI. I couldn't agree more. Also, the scene where he is swearing is hilarious! Loved it! Jon and I both gave it a solid 4 out of 5 stars. (Jon judges movies on a 5 star system, 4 stars means it was a great movie. The 5th star is there for movies that completely push the 4 star boundary and are so good that they need their own category. Movies that will remain classics forever. Jon said he might bump this one up to 5, but he's still thinking about it.)
Somewhere was good. It wasn't nearly as great as The King's Speech. I loved The Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation. I think Sofia Coppola is a great director and I love how down to earth she is in interviews, but Somewhere never reached past the "good" mark. It made me smile, occasionally I laughed, and certain parts were quite touching. Overall the movie was a bit dry though. I enjoy movies that are slow and take their time, giving you a chance to meditate on the themes and characters. However, a film still needs some spark to it. This one had some, but not enough to merit a "great" from me. 3 out of 5 stars.
I didn't get a chance to take pictures before the sun went down, so I snapped these quickly when I got home at about 3:30 AM. What a night. It was fun. I love date night with Jon!
