My New Workspace!

Bye bye outdoor pictures!! Ever since moving into a house I envisioned setting up a studio space in the basement for indoor pictures. This was during the winter when it was very ideal. Like most things I put it off, but kept thinking about how nice it would be to get it started.

Well, after having a completely rotten afternoon I just needed something to do once I got home to take my mind off of things. The problem is that my basement is full of centipedes so I only go down there when it is absolutely necessary. Well, I was in such a bad mood when I got home today that I decided I wasn't going to let any centipedes push me around. So, I decided I would just start looking for ideas for my little studio area. I started by looking for a blue curtain that I sewed ribbons and sequins all over for one of my films. I thought it would be a great backdrop. I couldn't find it though!!!! Gah!

While looking I did come across an awesome vintage suitcase (which actually belongs to my step-mom so hopefully I don't get into trouble for using it!) and my old purse phone, which is not vintage, but is meant to look vintage. I also grabbed a little clock, a chair with a really amazing floral print, set up one of my lights and voila!! Instant lovely studio!

Panthro really liked the set-up and wanted to model for me, he is wearing a 2007 grey and white fur coat:

I still felt bummed about not finding my blue curtain with the ribbons though. I felt I still needed some type of backdrop, so I went upstairs and went through my clothes dr. clothes (clothes dr. clothes are clothes that need to be fixed) and found this beautiful dress that unfortunately has a blue stain near the bottom so I can't wear it. It was perfect! I grabbed a pretty hanger for it and hung it up. I'm really happy with my studio. It's simple, vintage, and will look great with my outfits. I'll probably change out the props every so often though to fit what I'm wearing.

This makes me re-evaluate why I enjoy fashion blogging and what I expect from it. Here are some questions it got me asking myself: What does having a studio (even if it's just a corner of my basement) change about my blog? How is it different from having a favorite spot in the house for photographs? Does using props make it less sincere? Am I just playing dress up or am I making some sort of social comment on fashion in the 00's-10's? Does this make this just as much a photography blog as a fashion blog?

Hmmmm. Lots to ponder.

Oh yeah, the clock I'm using glows in the dark. I tried to take a picture of it, but this is how it turned out:

Weird, eh?

Vintage Wednesdays #4 (On Thursday)

Yes, I do realize that today is Thursday and not Wednesday. Let's just pretend though, okay? This week's Vintage Wednesday feature is 'spaghetti dog figurines' from the 50's.

Jon and I inherited them from my step-grandmother. I love animals and all things animal related, but even I have to admit that these things are kind of ugly. Kind of ugly in the way that they become cool again. (Okay, admittedly the two in the front aren't THAT bad, but look at the one in the back. Yep...) We had a hard time deciding whether or not to keep them, but their weirdness won out against their ugliness and now they have a permanent spot on our china cabinet.

These porcelain pups were once very popular in the 50's. I was told that it was common for people to put them on top of their television sets. (Yes, remember when TV's where actually pieces of furniture and not a thin, sleek screen mounted on the wall?) As far as I know along with this type there were also poodles and cats. There were probably even more animals than that, but that's all that I'm sure of. My step-mom told me that her mother got them in the Upper Peninsula, but she's not quite sure of what store.

That's about all of the info that I have on these little guys. I tried doing some research on them, but I didn't really have any luck finding anything on their history.

I hope you enjoyed this week's installment of Vintage Wednesdays!! Check back next week for more vintage fun!

P.S. Sorry the photos are a bit blurry, but I was in a hurry when I took these and didn't have time to mess with my lighting for optimal photo quality. :(

Less Dirty Today

It's been a bit less dirty working on the set lately, so I've been able to slightly improve upon my daily jeans and t-shirts! I added this jumper over it to feel more 'me'. (And it provides extra pocket space!)

Also, isn't my sunflower looking great?

Three for One Today

Three outfits from last week:

1) Striped Purple Shirt and Black Jeans:

2) Casual, but clean!!

3) I finally got to dress up!! I'm been living in slimy t-shirts and jeans all week. I haven't been feeling like myself lately. It felt so amazing to put on a dress. Unfortunately I had to take these pictures using the mirror as Jon was at work and our tripods are being used for the film that I'm working on downtown. I liked the outfit too much to not photograph it. (Please ignore the messy backgrounds...like I've said we've been very busy lately, so no time to pick up after ourselves!)

And these pictures are blurry but I thought they looked cool:
